Community and Youth Development Officer (RETHINK IRELAND –EQUITY IN EDUCATION FUND)

Main Purpose of Role:

The purpose of this post is to design and deliver innovative methodologies and approaches to promote the advancement of equality of outcomes from education systems and providers for Traveller and Roma children and young people across Donegal.

 

The Community and Youth Development officer will promote the practice of community development in the delivery of this education project. The Community and Youth Development Officer will lead on developing a creative and accessible online and social media presence to promote the project and build youth participation. The project will promote cultural diversity and interculturalism with education providers across the county.

Conditions of Work:

 

  • ●The Community and Youth Development officer will be required to work 35 hours per week.
  • ●This role will be subject to a 3-month probationary period.
  • ●Full Clean Driver’s License or access to transport.
  • ●This is a contract of a fixed nature for a period of 36 months.These terms may be extended or reduced subject to continuation of funding.
  • ●The post will require working outside of normal office hours for which candidates will be compensated through an operational system of “time in lieu.”
  • ●Travel and Subsistence expenses will be provided in accordance with DTP.

Main Duties

You will be required to...

To coordinate and oversee the development and implementation of the TravEd Project in line with the Rethink contract and to support the Community Education Worker. This will include building positive relationships with Traveller and Roma communities and in particular Traveller and Roma children and young people.

To design and deliver innovative methodologies and approaches to promote equality of outcome from education for the Traveller and Roma communities in County Donegal.

The Community and Youth Development officer will develop frameworks in collaboration with the Education Development Team and relevant stakeholders for the implementation of the TravEd Project and in line with Rethink Ireland’s requirements.

The officer will design and deliver a communication strategy which emphasises social media/film production as a tool for social change and documenting the story of the project with the voices and experiences of Traveller and Roma children and young People.

The officer will carry out a baseline study of the current experiences of Traveller and Roma children and young people participation in education across the county including data, collection and analysis.

To develop relationships with education providers from pre-school to third level to promote equality of outcomes from education.

To design, develop and deliver youth leadership development programmes/initiatives with Traveller and Roma children and young people and in collaboration with other youth work providers in the county.

To design, develop and deliver training/workshops in interculturalism in education settings.

To carry out all reporting requirements including financial oversight with administration to the funders and management of DTP.

This list of duties is not exhaustive and may be amended in order that the funded programme can be fully delivered and meets the requirements of Rethink Ireland.

Core Competencies

Working knowledge of the implementation of a community development or youth work approach to social inclusion

You will be required to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of a community development approach to social inclusion issues.

Excellence Communication and interpersonal skills including IT expertise

You will have experience of forming good working relationships with communities and organisations, combined with excellent written, verbal communication, listening skills and IT skills including excellent online social media skills as a tool for promoting and building the profile of the project

Appreciation and Understanding of the Education system in Ireland

You will be required to demonstrate a knowledge of the education system in Ireland and allied education services.

Skills to carry out baseline studies and evaluation methodologies

You will be required to demonstrate that you can collate qualitative and quantitative data.

Relevant Third Level Qualifications

A recognised third level qualification relevant to the role.

‘Other’

You must hold a clean, current driving license as travel across Donegal and beyond will be a requisite of this role.

  • ●Understanding and appreciation of Interculturalism.
  • ●Knowledge of the NGO’s and state bodies with a focus on education, children and young people, equality and Human Rights.
  • ●Excellent report writing skills.
  • ●An understanding and knowledge of evaluation tools and systems.
  • ●Event/activities organisation from developing the concept, planning, delivery on the day and risk assessment.
  • ●A knowledge and awareness of national and local policy in relation to children and young people in Ireland including Children First.
