Editor - Fermanagh Herald.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking Editor to lead our Fermanagh newsroom in delivering high-quality journalism across print and digital platforms. Reporting directly to the Group Editor, the successful candidate will have a deep understanding of local news, strong editorial judgment, and experience leveraging digital tools to enhance storytelling and audience engagement.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the planning, editing, and publication of local news stories, features, and opinion pieces.
  • Champion local news, community life, and the voices of local people.
  • Ensure accuracy, fairness, and adherence to journalistic ethics.
  • Develop editorial strategies that align with the publication’s mission and audience interests.
  • Manage content across print and digital platforms for a cohesive editorial approach.
  • Collaborate with the Digital Editor to optimise stories for SEO, mobile consumption, and social media engagement.
  • Assist in developing multimedia content strategies, including video, podcasts, and interactive graphics.
  • Analyse web traffic, social media performance, and audience insights to refine content strategies.
  • Foster community engagement through social media, newsletters, and digital outreach.
  • Implement innovative digital storytelling techniques to attract new readers.
  • Lead and mentor a team of reporters, freelancers, and contributors.
  • Assign stories, provide feedback, and enforce deadlines.
  • Work closely with design, marketing, and advertising teams for cohesive branding and audience engagement.
  • Utilise analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics) to track story performance.
  • Represent the Fermanagh Herald at public and social engagements.
  • Manage the budget and costs of the editorial department.
  • Experience with social media management tools for news distribution is an advantage.

 

 Required Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in journalism, preferably as an editor or senior reporter.
  • Ideally a minimum of 4 years as a Senior Sub Editor, Deputy Editor or Editor with experience within the newspaper industry.
  • Third level education, ideally in journalism.
  • Strong writing, editing, and headline-writing skills.
  • Experience in digital news platforms and social media strategies.
  • Familiarity with multimedia content, including video and podcast production.
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices and audience analytics would be an advantage
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a local newsroom setting.
  • Understanding of emerging digital journalism trends (AI, data journalism).
  • Background in community engagement and reader-driven journalism.

 

Location:

Position will be based in Fermanagh with the need to collaborate closely with our Tyrone and Donegal Editorial Teams.
